Balance Your Root Chakra to Calm Anxiety

 

The root chakra is also called the Muladhara chakra, base chakra, or 1st chakra and is one of the seven primary energy centers located at the base of the spine. A blocked root chakra can prevent the flow of life force energy from entering various energetic pathways in the body causing levels of fear and anxiety to rise. Anyone who struggles with anxiety can benefit from unblocking their root chakra. In this post learn what happens when your root chakra is blocked, five signs of a blocked root chakra, and easy ways to activate a grounding force to strengthen and unblock it.

The word chakra is a Sanskrit term meaning spinning wheel of energy. In my post What are Chakras? I describe how chakras function. As the root chakra is the closest energy point to the earth, it is the grounding force for manifestation in the physical world and represents everything materially solid. If the root chakra is blocked, physical health, emotional security, and one’s material stability will be compromised.

SIGNS OF A BLOCKED ROOT CHAKRA

As the root chakra is connected to physicality, it is associated with the basic needs of survival, food, shelter, and safety. When this spiritual point of entry is balanced, one can relax, feel safe, and able to be fully present as one trusts in the process of life. If one feels that the basic needs of survival, food, shelter, or safety are threatened, their root chakra will begin to close. Consequently, the root chakra can close for other reasons and if it does, fear levels will rise as there is no flow to the body. In either case, the following symptoms may appear:

  • anxiety

  • headaches

  • physical weakness

  • lymphatic congestion

  • mental aloofness, confusion, and/or disconnection from others.

HOW TO BALANCE THE ROOT CHAKRA

ESSENTIAL OILS

Using essential oils with calming, comforting, and grounding properties helps the root chakra relax and connect one to the earth element.

  • Cypress

  • Pine

  • Cedarwood

  • Sandalwood

  • Ylang ylang

FOOD

Eating the proper types of food can support the physical body and the root chakra.

Root vegetables are edible plants that grow underground. Carrots, beets, radishes, potatoes, and onions have a characteristic growth and connection to the earth that provides a descending energetic quality required to synchronize and strengthen the root chakra energy and the physical body.

Proteins are building blocks essential to providing structure and support. Proteins have stabilizing energy that helps strengthen the root chakra. Plant-based protein options include tofu, asparagus, green peas, lentils, spinach, artichokes, chickpeas, and Brussel sprouts. Animal protein options include meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy.

Minerals as defined by geology.com are solid substances formed naturally in the earth that organisms need to grow, repair tissue, metabolize, and carry out other body processes. Minerals strengthen the root chakra by vibrating in resonance with the earth element.

CRYSTALS

A crystal is a solid substance made up of various organic and inorganic materials with an established batch of molecules or atoms as per geology.com. Crystals contain minerals so they naturally resonate with the vibration of the root chakra. Try using Hematite, Iron Pyrite, or Jasper to open the root chakra.

 
 

MUSIC

The root chakra vibrates at a frequency between 262-432 Hz which resonates closely with the musical note C. Listening to music in this range will help unblock the root chakra, healing it and bringing it back into alignment. Here are some that I use:

EXERCISE

Stomp your feet, jump up and down or go jogging to activate muscles in your legs. This can release tension and bring energy lower in the body, strengthening the root chakra. Practicing gentler exercises like yoga can open muscles of the groin and lower back activating the root chakra and connecting it to the vibration of the earth.
